The bar was high when it came to creating a package that would feel at home within the existing Alien universe, while also bringing something new to the table. To achieve this, we studied the franchise’s legacy and design DNA, and sought a way to fuse Giger aesthetics into earthly, planetary formations.
Our VFX team then pushed the boundaries of how these Giger-esque formations could affect the planet, creating beautiful and unsettling distortions to the Earth we’re so used to seeing. These served as the core visuals for the package to build upon. From there, we developed a type system that incorporated the style of the iconic title but evolved it through texture and glitch.
To ground the gritty, retro-futuristic concept, we shot all of our Giger-Earth plates through a CRT monitor. We also commissioned a custom glitch box to be built that allowed us to generate tailored frequency disruptions — aka glitches — to further immerse the visuals in an analog, otherworldly feel.
Our type system likewise merged the legacy and new. We developed an animation style for the interstitials and messaging that utilized glitch and texture to not only bring on the type, but keep it as a living thing through sustained subtle glitching. The main title married the piece-by-piece of the iconic animation with heavier glitching and distortion, with hero Giger Earth visuals behind it.
